The Difference, in One Bowl of Oats

Take 100 g of dry oats and cook them into a 400 g bowl of porridge. The PE ratio doesn't move — it's 0.2 before and 0.2 after, because water has no macros. The energy density falls from about 3.9 kcal/g to about 1.0, because the same calories now occupy four times the space.

That single example is the whole disagreement. PE is water-blind by design; Volumetrics is built almost entirely around water. Whether that's a bug or a feature depends on which kind of hunger is beating you.


What the PE Diet Optimizes

The PE Diet, from Dr. Ted Naiman's 2018 book of that name, condenses food choice into one ratio:

What the ratio is really buying you is the satiety response protein produces per calorie: stronger CCK and PYY signalling, a slower drop back into hunger, and — the part that matters most in a deficit — better retention of lean mass. Higher-protein diets consistently outperform lower-protein ones on both fullness and lean-mass retention during weight loss (Leidy et al., 2015).

What Volumetrics Optimizes

Volumetrics comes out of Dr. Barbara Rolls' feeding-study program at Penn State, and its unit is energy density: calories per gram of food as you eat it. Rolls sorts foods into four bands:

The mechanism is mechanical rather than hormonal. Stretch receptors in the stomach wall measure volume, not calories, and when subjects in Rolls' studies were served meals at different energy densities and allowed to eat freely, they ate roughly the same weight of food each time — ending up 200–500 calories a day lower on the low-density meals without reporting more hunger (Rolls, 2009).

Where the Two Agree

More than the framing suggests. Run the same foods through both metrics and a large middle band gets approval from each:

Lean protein that carries its own water is the overlap. So is the far end: added fats are the lowest-scoring foods on both systems, for different stated reasons that arrive at the same plate. If your eating already looks like lean protein plus a pile of vegetables plus minimal added fat, you are running both diets whether you named them or not — which is roughly the argument Naiman makes in Satiety Per Calorie, that most working diets are the same diet wearing different labels.


Where They Genuinely Disagree

The disagreements sit at the two extremes, and they're the useful part.

Foods PE rewards and Volumetrics flags

Dry, concentrated protein. Beef jerky scores a PE of 1.9 but sits at 2.4 kcal/g — dense enough that 100 g is a small handful and 400 calories arrives quickly. Whey protein powder scores 7.3 on PE, and as a dry powder runs 3.8 kcal/g; in liquid form it clears the stomach fast and barely troubles the stretch receptors at all. Chicken breast is a PE superstar at 8.6, and Volumetrics files it at the top of the low band or the bottom of the medium one depending on how it's cooked.

None of these are bad foods. But PE alone will happily approve a day built on jerky, cheese sticks and shakes that leaves you hungry by mid-afternoon.

Foods Volumetrics rewards and PE flags

Water-heavy carbohydrate. Boiled potato is 0.8 kcal/g and topped the Holt satiety index — and its PE ratio is 0.13. Strawberries are 0.4 kcal/g and 0.12 on PE. Broth-based soup can be brought below 0.5 kcal/g by adding water alone, which is invisible to the PE ratio. PE: every input is printed on the label. Protein, carbs, fat, fiber — one division and you have a score you can compare across any two products in the supermarket aisle. No scale required, no cooked-weight problem, no judgment calls.

Volumetrics: energy density needs the calories and the weight of the food as eaten, which the label only gives you for packaged goods. A chicken thigh that loses 25% of its weight in the pan has a different energy density on the plate than in the package. Typical Results Timeline

Both diets lose fat the same way every diet does: by producing a calorie deficit you didn't have to white-knuckle. The difference is in what the first few weeks look like on the scale.

Week 1. PE-style eating usually pulls carbohydrate down as a side effect of raising the ratio, and lower carbohydrate means less stored glycogen and less water held with it — so the first week often shows a scale drop larger than the fat lost. Volumetrics keeps carbohydrate in the picture (potatoes, fruit, grains, soup), so week 1 moves less. Neither number is telling you much about fat yet.

Weeks 2–6. Both settle into whatever rate the deficit supports, which for most people is roughly 0.5–1% of bodyweight per week. This is where the two diverge on how it feels rather than how fast it goes: PE eaters typically report going longer between meals, Volumetrics eaters typically report finishing meals feeling physically full. No timeline here is a promise. Rate depends on starting bodyweight, the size of the deficit, training, sleep and adherence, and averages hide enormous individual spread.


Which One Fits You

Lean toward the PE Diet if:

  • You lift, or you're worried about losing muscle along with the fat
  • You want a single number you can check at the shelf without an app
  • Your problem is snacking and long gaps rather than portion size at meals
  • You eat out often and need a rule that survives a restaurant menu

Lean toward Volumetrics if:

  • You finish normal-sized meals still wanting more food, not more flavor
  • Small portions are what has broken every previous attempt
  • You genuinely like vegetables, soups and fruit and don't want them demoted
  • You'd rather change what's on the plate than count anything

What the Evidence Supports

Both frameworks rest on real research, and both are syntheses rather than trials of themselves — no one has run "PE Diet vs Volumetrics" head to head.

  • Energy density lowers intake. Rolls' feeding studies are the strongest leg either diet stands on: change the energy density, hold everything else constant, and free-living intake falls by hundreds of calories a day without a hunger penalty (Rolls, 2009).
  • Protein raises satiety and protects lean mass. Consistent across the literature and the reason the PE lever exists at all (Leidy et al., 2015).
  • Fullness per calorie varies wildly between foods. Holt's 1995 satiety index fed subjects 240-calorie portions of 38 foods and found several-fold differences in reported fullness — with boiled potato at the top, a result Volumetrics predicts and PE does not.
  • Neither has long-term randomized outcome data as a named program. What has long-term data is adherence, and adherence isn't a property of the diet — it's a property of the fit between the diet and the person.

Can you do the PE diet and volumetrics at the same time? Yes, and the overlap is larger than either book implies. Shrimp, white fish, nonfat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and lean poultry score well on both metrics simultaneously, and both frameworks demote the same short list of foods — oils, nuts, cheese and other dense added fats. The only real tension is with dry protein foods like jerky and powders, which PE approves and Volumetrics flags, and with fruit and potatoes, which Volumetrics approves and PE flags.

Is volumetrics the same as volume eating? Volume eating is the informal, gym-culture version of the same idea, and Volumetrics is the researched framework it descends from. Both select foods with a low calorie cost per gram so a large physical portion fits inside a calorie target. Volumetrics adds structure the casual version usually lacks: the four energy-density categories, and the feeding-study evidence behind them.

Does the PE diet ignore fiber and water? It accounts for fiber — the ratio uses net carbs, so fiber is subtracted from the denominator and a high-fiber food scores better than its total-carb number suggests. Water it ignores entirely, which is by design: the ratio is meant to be computed from a label in seconds, and water carries no macros. That's why cooked and dry oats score identically on PE while their energy densities differ roughly fourfold, and it's the single clearest reason to read the ratio alongside an energy-density check rather than on its own.


The Bottom Line

The PE Diet and Volumetrics are not competing theories of fat loss. They're two levers on the same fraction — protein per calorie and calories per gram — and each one is blind to what the other measures. PE can't see the water in your food; Volumetrics can't see whether the protein target got hit.
